Is your pet scratching? The cause could be food-related.
Dermatological symptoms such as itching, redness, ear infections, malassezia, etc. can be caused by an unsuitable diet for our pet.
Dog allergies and intolerances are often caused by the poor quality of the raw materials in the food, especially proteins. Some foods are made with animal-derived flours that have little biological and nutritional value and are rich in allergens.
Food allergies They represent 10-15% of cases and generally the manifestation is dermatological, we will notice red skin (skin erythema) and itching (licking of the paws, scratching, shaking of the ears)
What is an allergy? It's an overreaction of antibodies to a specific substance. In dogs and cats, it's proteins that can cause allergies.
Food intolerance It is the inability to assimilate certain substances, usually causing diarrhea, abdominal swelling, or Malassezia overgrowth.
Chicken is often “demonized,” but in reality, allergies or intolerances are entirely subjective, so not all animals are allergic to chicken!
It often happens that they are only like this because they are fed chicken for most of their lives!
How can this be solved?
It is solved by identifying the protein causing the allergic manifestation through a dietary trial or a exclusion diet , what does it mean?
Proteins that are currently commonly used in the diet are excluded and new ones are experimented with for at least two months.
Afterwards, a provocation is performed, that is, the old food is reintroduced to "provoke" an allergic rebound reaction and confirm that it is indeed that protein that is causing the problem.
Most commercial products designed for pets with food allergies or intolerances use alternative meats to the more common ones and are single-protein , meaning they contain only one animal protein. Chicken and beef, therefore, are frequently replaced with proteins from fish, horse, lamb, rabbit, pork, duck, venison, or even ostrich.
An excellent alternative is home-made food , fresh food is always better, also because they are often allergic to the mites contained in the kibble bags (!), if nothing works you should opt for a hydrolyzed food.
It is clear that if you are doing a diet trial and then you give them outside of the table or non-hypoallergenic snacks you are undoing the work done and wasting your money on alternative diets.
